Obituary

John Nell (1936– 2024) passed away peacefully surrounded by all who loved him July 5, 2024 from Parkinson’s. He was born on June 24, 1936 in the Netherlands to Cornelis and Hendrika (Soede) Nell. After moving to Canada, John, only a young teen, worked hard to support his family. He married his life partner and beloved wife, Carole Hughes, July 8, 1961. John became a talented autobody mechanic and had his own shop. He could build or fix anything, always finding opportunities to expand his technical skills. He built 2 homes and repaired too many vehicles to count. When a career change was needed, he began teaching in Oshawa. In the early 1970s John moved his family to Collingwood to continue his teaching career. He was an autobody teacher and a dedicated cross country ski coach at Collingwood Collegiate Institute for many years. He was also a member of many community groups. Upon retirement he enjoyed many years at the local golf courses perfecting his game. He travelled extensively, exploring new destinations always ready for an adventure. John was a family man, a wonderful husband, brother, father, and the best Opa. He attended every family event and was present at every milestone: school concerts, graduations, hockey games and horseshows. John is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Carole; sons Kirk, Greg (Bonnie), Brent (Lisa); grandchildren Emma, Jack and Oliver; sisters Reta McCort (JD), Agnes Bregman and Corrie Davis (Randy); and brother Peter Nell (Elaine). He is pre deceased by parents, Cornelis and Hendrika; siblings Pieter, Cornelis, and Joan Schoenmaker; sister in law Lynda Lane; and daughter in law Tay Nell. He will be remembered with fondness and tons of love for his quick wit and determination.We would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Lewin and all the amazing support staff that cared for John these last few months. Vistiation will take place on July 10 from 6to8pm at the fawcett Funeral Home, Collingwood Chapel. The service of remembrances will take place in the chapel on Thursday July 11th at 1pm . In lieu of flowers, donations to Collingwood General and Marine Hospital, Hospice Georgian Triangle Foundation or a charity of your choosing would be appreciated by Johns’ family.
